Resiliencia: Jhon Durán

Image
Jhon Durán's journey embodies extraordinary resilience. In Medellín, Colombia, where poverty was a constant reality, football became his escape and his path to a better life. He rose through the ranks at Envigado FC, a club renowned for producing stars like James Rodríguez, and at just 17, he became one of the youngest goalscorers in the Colombian top flight. His remarkable talent led to a transfer to MLS' Chicago Fire in 2021. He quickly adapted, scoring 8 goals in his debut season and demonstrating his potential on the world stage. This performance attracted the attention of European scouts, culminating in Aston Villa signing him for €18M in January 2023, with a €3.9M annual salary. After 78 appearances and 20 goals, including a standout Champions League campaign that secured the final automatic qualification spot for the Villans, a life-changing opportunity presented itself. Al Nassr made him an offer he couldn't refuse: €20M per year, tax-free, playing along...

Barcelona HAMMERS Real Madrid

Image
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – In a clash of titans that will be etched in footballing history, FC Barcelona emphatically dismantled their eternal rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in a thrilling Supercopa de España final.   Entering the match with a renewed sense of purpose and a youthful exuberance, Barcelona unleashed a relentless attacking display that left the reigning champions humbled and shell-shocked. The match however began in the most perfect manner for Los Blancos. The match began with a shock as Kylian Mbappé's early strike gave Real Madrid an unexpected lead within 5 minutes. However, after an early setback, Barcelona responded with the ferocity of a caged lion. The teenage sensation Lamine Yamal ignited the ground with a goal that showcased the incredible talent emerging from the club's youth system: the famed La Masia academy. From that point on, it was a relentless Barcelona onslaught. Raphinha, a constant menace, scored twice, including a thunderous header assisted by the imperi...

From Magic to Meh: Why the New UCL Format Lets Down a Desi Fan.

Image
As a die-hard football fan, waking up or even staying awake at ungodly hours to catch Champions League nights has been a ritual for years. The thrill of those knockout ties, the underdog victories, major storylines, and last-minute goals – it's pure, unadulterated drama! However, with the news of the new format coming into effect for the 2024-25 season, my excitement feels like it's been hit by a clumsy tackle. Here's why, as a passionate follower from afar, I'm worried about the future of the UCL: The Beauty of the Knockout Stages: Let's face it, the current knockout format is pure magic. Remember the 2019 comeback by Liverpool against Barcelona? The sheer disbelief, the emotional rollercoaster – that's what makes the Champions League special. Or how about Chelsea's dramatic win over Bayern Munich in 2012? Those moments, those underdog stories, are what we live for. They wouldn't exist in a watered-down league format with guaranteed group-stage appearan...

We take a look at the top young players who could secure big-money moves in the next transfer window. Cody Gakpo (Netherlands) Undoubtedly the breakout star of the tournament. Gakpo had a brilliant campaign with the Dutch Lions having scored in all three group stage games and displaying some quality runs between opposition defenses.  Manchester United and Arsenal are two teams that are touted to be his next destination. PSV have shown interest in cashing in their starboy but it will be interesting to see where young Cody ends up at. Ritsu Doan (Japan) The dream run of the Japanese to the Round of 16 was courtesy of Ritsu Doan's crucial equalizers against the powerhouses Germany and Spain. The 24-year-old could potentially leave Freiburg as soon as the next transfer window after joining last s...

SUMMER TRANSFER WINDOW 2022 WINNERS AND LOSERS.

Image
RATING THE SUMMER TRANSFER WINDOW   The Summer Transfer window has officially ended. Approx. 3.6 billion Pounds and over 1400 transfer deals later, the squads of Europe's elite are set to contest against each other once again in their respective leagues on their quest for glory.   Let us take a look at potential winners and losers of the summer window:   WINNER: NOTTINGHAM FOREST   Forest have had themselves a remarkable rise with the newly promoted Premier League side bringing in no less than 21 signings (yep, you read it correctly, TWENTY-ONE). What’s more astonishing is that they have spent a net total of 175m Euros for a window which saw them bring in record signing Morgan Gibbs-white, Goalkeeper Dean Henderson, England star Jesse Lingard and most notably the loan deal of Renan Lodi from Atletico Madrid.   Steve Cooper better have his squad plans ready because this is going to be a headache to handle.     LOSER: SERIE A   One of the best title...

I binge-watched Pogba's new documentary and regret it immediately.....

Image
So for my vacation, I thought of watching something football-related and I stumbled upon the reviews of Paul Pogba's docu-series called "The Pogmentary: Born ready" on Amazon PrimeVideo . My eyes couldn't get off the fact that it got a one-star rating on IMDb . ONE STAR. Those who are into football know that Paul Pogba is one of the most exciting players out there. A brilliant midfielder with a flashy presence on and off the pitch, it was hard to believe that it would get such a low rating. However, after binging the five episodes for almost half a day I can guarantee this: it got what it deserved. To give it some credit, it began pretty well with Pogba introducing his family, showing us his backstory, his meteoric rise, life after the world cup triumph, and his position with Manchester United with his final year of the contract left. (Reminder: on the day of writing, La Pioche is no longer a Red Devil and could potentially return to his former club Juventus .)  Ho...

THE PROBLEM CALLED "MANCHESTER UNITED"

Image
The misery of Manchester United continues as the red's 4-0 away loss against Brighton means that it's now statistically impossible for them to touch the top four places even if they manage to with the rest of their games. Knocked out of the UCL round of 16 by Atletico Madrid, the Red Devils will now play in Europe next season but in the UEFA Europa League. Ralf Ragnick's side will be making their second appearance in the UEL after Ole Gunnar Solsjaker led them to the final in Gdansk, where they lost a heartbreaking penalty shootout to Unai Emery's Villareal. Only David De Gea missed his penalty, extending Manchester United's trophy wait to 1799 days. A gentle reminder that ManUtd won the Europa League when Jose Mourinho was in charge, which also happened to be their final prize. Manchester United had completely revamped their roster for the 2021/22 season. Signings such as Jadon Sancho (Dortmund) and Raphael Varane (Real Madrid) were made this season, but the most s...
